After surviving multiple shootouts and a high-speed chase, in which his dad allegedly threatened to use him as a human shield, a southern California baby is more than lucky to be alive.
Police were called to the Long Beach home of the 5-month-old’s father, Joseph Gonzales, after papa reportedly fired shots inside his home as part of a violent dispute with his girlfriend and her mother at around 2 a.m. on Saturday.
By the time officers arrived, Gonzales had already fled the scene in a black SUV.
Upon discovering his 5-month-old son was in the back seat of the vehicle, the 22-year-old told cops over the phone that he’d harm the toddler and use him as a human shield.
"He specifically stated he would harm the baby and use him as a shield against police," said police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt.
Not content with simply verbally threatening the life of his child, Gonzales literally put the tyke’s worldly existence in danger when he returned home and began blasting rounds at responding officers.
Authorities say Gonzales next got back into his vehicle and led them on a high-speed chase with his helpless baby still in the backseat.
He sped down the 110 and 405 Freeways ending up in San Pedro. Gonzales eventually pulled over at an intersection and began blasting at a cop car before finally admitting defeat.
While one officer sustained minor injuries during one of the multiple shootouts after shards of broken glass cut him, Gonzales’ baby miraculously apparently made it out unnscathed.
The child received a full check up at an area hospital just to make sure all was in order and is now in the care of grandparents.
Gonzales has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a firearm on a police officer, child cruelty that could result in possible death, felon in possession of a firearm and a parole violation.
He’s currently in Long Beach’s county slammer and is, thankfully, being held without bail.
Correction: January 15, 2015
An earlier version of this article misstated the date the incident occurred. It happened Saturday, January 10th, not Sunday, the 11th. The mistake remains in the voice-over of the above video.
