A former Grand Rapids, Michigan, high school tutor convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old football player will have to spend eight to 25 years behind bars, a Kent County judge decided on Wednesday.
Abigail Simon, 35, collapsed twice during the two-hour long hearing. The sentence comes after she rejected a plea deal that would have only seen her locked up for a few months.
Simon apparently turned down several plea bargains for lighter sentences in order to try and fight and clear her name.
A sobbing Simon insisted that she was the victim in her relationship with the 15-year-old, while the victim’s mother said in a statement that her son was the victim. The victim’s mother also added that she hoped Simon’s sentencing would be severe.
The two allegedly sent more than 1,000 text messages to each other during a relationship that started as that of a student and tutor in the winter of 2013 and turned into a sexual relationship by the spring of 2014.
The teen said that he was taking sexual instructions from Simon. He said Simon had given him a key to her apartment and told him she wanted to marry him, if only he wasn’t 15.
Even after their relationship was discovered by parents, Catholic school administrators and the police in April 2013, the teen and Simon secretly met two times. The teen said they emailed and talked over the phone. Simon said they also met twice after that, including once in Saugatuck, and had oral sex both times.
The 6’3” and 220 pound teen said they each had pet names for each other. He said Simon called him “boo,” and he called her “baby girl.”
