Anti-gay wedding cake: baker faces discrimination complaint after refusing to ice hateful Bible cake

2015-04-14 10

A Peruvian bakery in Denver is facing legal action after owner Marjorie Silva refused to decorate a Bible-shaped cake with anti-LGBT words and images.

“I remember the words sinner, disgrace and homosexuality,” Silva said of the requested message. “he wanted me to draw two guys holding hands with an ‘x’ on top.”

Silva, 40, declined to name the customer, but according to reports, Bill Jack of Castle Rock, Colorado filed the religious discrimination complaint against Azucar Bakery. Jack’s wife reportedly confirmed and released the following statement on Jack’s behalf:

“I believe I was discriminated against by the bakery based on my creed. As a result, I filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights division. Out of respect for the process, I will wait for the director to release his findings before making further comments.”

Silva said she wrote a rebuttal letter to DORA to explain her position.

“We never refused service,” Silva wrote in the letter. “But we did feel that it was not right for us to write hateful words against any human being.”

According to Silva, Jack requested a cake in the shape of a Bible in March 2014. Toward the end of the meeting, Jack handed Silva a slip of paper containing “discriminatory words and images.”

Silva said Jack did not allow her to make a copy of the message. When she offered to bake the cake and give Jack the tools to write the message himself, he reportedly told her to get a lawyer.

In June, Silva received word that a religious complaint had been filed against her. After she sent her rebuttal, the director requested information about her religious background and the religious background of her employees. Silva expects to hear back from the director in three months.

Bill Jack is reportedly the co-founder of Worldview Academy, a non-denominational Christian organization that provides leadership camps for students. One of the core values listed on the Worldview Academy website is to “reject the idea that wealth or resources are more valuable than people, or that individuals should be valued according to their merit or ability to produce.”
