A man wielding a fake gun was arrested this evening after he entered the studios of the Dutch national broadcaster NOS in the town of Hilversum and demanded time on the air to address the nation, the network’s director said, according to the BBC.
The man, a 19-year-old wearing a dark suit and tie, is seen on news video footage pacing around an empty studio before police storm the room and arrest him.
Witnesses said the Dutch national was holding a pistol, later determined to be fake, when he entered the building. He used the gun to threaten a guard, who let him into an empty studio. Police soon surrounded the NOS studios building while those inside were evacuated. Officers then entered the studio where the gunman was and arrested him.
The BBC reported that an NOS broadcast at 8 p.m. local time displayed a message reading “In connection with circumstances, no broadcast is available at this time.” The channel did not air any programs for an hour while police searched the building.
The gunman was also reportedly carrying a letter that said: “Realize that I am not on my own. Furthermore, eight high explosives have been planted that contain radioactive material. If you don’t take me to studio 8 to make my broadcast, we will be forced to step into action.” Police are currently investigating the veracity of the letter.
Police are still investigating the man’s motives and questioning him. He could be charged with kidnapping, possession of a firearm and threatening people with a weapon, prosecutor Johan Bac said at a press conference.
