NBC’s Nightly News anchor Brian Williams issued an on-air apology last night for a lie about an event that happened 12 years ago.
“I want to apologize. I said I was travelling in an aircraft that was hit by RPG fire, I was instead in a following aircraft,” Williams admitted.
Williams reported the truth in 2003 when he said, “Suddenly, without knowing why, we learned we’d been ordered to land in the desert.”
Over time, he’s been inching himself into the spotlight. By 2008, Williams blogged that it was the chopper in front of him. And in 2013, Williams told David Letterman that he was in the helicopter that was shot down.
Williams referenced the incident again on Friday when he said, “The helicopter we were in was forced down after being hit by an RPG.”
In reality, Williams and company were actually an hour behind the helicopter that was shot down, according to Lance Reynolds who was actually on the helicopter that was hit.
“Sorry dude, I don’t remember you being on my aircraft,” Reynolds posted on Williams’ Facebook page. Joseph Miller and Ben Smalls also called out Williams in subsequent comments.
So what’s next for B. Will? A rap career by chance? He’s already had several viral hits in that category.
We hope that NBC gives Williams the boot for repeatedly telling fictional stories on air and I’m guessing we’re not the only one.
