Poor Mubarak Batambuze. This 50-year-old fisherman from central Uganda lost his eight-month pregnant wife when Nabire went down to the banks of Lake Kyoga to fetch water and was snatched by what Ugandan wildlife officials said was a 1,300 pound, 25-foot long crocodile.
Nothing was left of his beloved but a few fingers and toes, and this grieving husband vowed revenge.
His chance came a few months later when Mubarak’s friends brought him news: A crocodile was back on the river bank and they were pretty sure it was the same beast.
Deciding on an epic showdown, Mubarak shelled out US$5 — a considerable sum for him — and commissioned a blacksmith craft a special sharp spear with a barbed hook.
Returning to the river, he found his prey. After stabbing it with his new spear, Mubarak and his friends roped the creature on to the shore and slew the massive monster.
Locals are hailing Mubarak as the savior of their village, saying six women and children were taken by what may have been the same croc last year. The dead animal was sent to a university and vets found what appear to be human bones inside it.
