Iowa train accident: freight train carrying ethanol derails, no one injured, dead, poisoned or high

2015-04-14 5

A Canadian Pacific train carrying ethanol derailed while traveling along the Mississippi River near Dubuque, Iowa on Wednesday morning.

Ten of the eleven train cars that derailed were carrying ethanol. At least one train car caught fire, while some slid into the Mississippi River. Authorities confirmed that some ethanol also ended up in the river.

Officials declared a half-mile evacuation zone. No occupied buildings were within that zone.

No one was reported killed or injured in the accident. Local newspaper Telegraph Herald reported that the remote location made it difficult for firefighters to get close to the derailed train.

It has been widely debated whether inflammable goods such as ethanol should be transported by freight trains.
