Engine flameout has been cited as a possible cause of the deadly TransAsia Airways air crash in Taiwan on Wednesday morning. The death-toll has risen to 31, with 12 people are still missing.
A flameout is the extinction of the flame in the engine’s combustion chamber, which can be caused by mechanical failure and fuel starvation. Another possible cause of a flameout is a birdstrike.
The TransAsia ATR-72-600 turboprop aircraft was flying with 58 people, including five crew members, 22 Taiwanese passengers and 31 Chinese passengers. The aircraft was traveling from Taipei Songshan Airport to the island of Kinmen on Wednesday, local media reported.
Air traffic control recordings show that the plane was cleared for takeoff at 10:52 a.m. The pilot sent out a distress call reporting engine flameout at 10:54 a.m. Seconds later, the plane clipped a bridge and hit a taxi before plunging into the Keelung River.
Authorities said the plane entered the water nose-first, leading to the belief that most of those trapped were seated in the front rows.
Some 1,000 soldiers, firemen and police experts were dispatched to assist in the rescue operation. An M3 amphibious rig and speedboats were also deployed.
This is the second TransAsia plane crash in seven months. In July last year, 48 people were killed when TransAsia flight GE222 crashed in Taiwan’s outlying island of Penghu.
All of the recordings and information extracted from the plane’s black box will be released either tomorrow or the day after, according to Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council.
