Rags to riches story: Captain of downed TransAsia crash devoted son and hero

2015-04-14 3

The pilots of the doomed flight that crashed into the Keelung River yesterday in the middle of Taipei are being hailed as heroes. As the flight lost engine power and control, the plane was over a residential area of the city, so the pilots must’ve chosen to ditch in the river to minimize casualties.

The captain of the downed flight, Liao Jianzong, age 41, came from a humble background. The eldest of two boys, Liao spent his youth helping his parents sell clothing in the local night market in Nantou, a farming city in southern Taiwan.

Despite his poor background Liao studied until he made it into flight school. After obtaining his license, he went to work for China Airlines, before making the switch to TransAsia Airways.

Liao was married and had a nine-year-old son.

Liao’s parents were finally able to retire from their small stand in the night market last year when he moved his parents into a new apartment as their retirement gift. After their lifetime of hardship, Liao was able to set up a comfortable retirement fund for his parents.

Neighbors said that Liao was always a very devoted son and his parents spoke of him with pride, even if they worried about him from time to time.

This week’s tragedy in Taipei was certainly a parent’s worst nightmare.
