Nearly three years after the publication of Fifty Shades of Grey, the top-selling book of 2012, the movie based on the first book of the erotic S&M trilogy is finally opening in theaters on Valentine’s Day.
The movie is directed by British actress and director Sam Taylor-Johnson and stars American actress and model Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey.
Although the series, which in its original form was a piece of Twilight fan fiction, has been criticized for its lack of literary merit, the movie has become the fastest-selling R-rated movie on movie ticket-selling website Fandango in its 15-year history.
The movie is expected to gross $60 million in the U.S. over the four-day Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day weekend, and $100 million in total worldwide. That would be the sixth-best opening weekend for an R-rated movie in the U.S.
Last week at a fan event at New York’s Seigfeld Theatre, director Taylor-Johnson announced that there will be two sequels.
