The United States is concerned about North Korea's nuclear weapons program after a think tank predicted Pyongyang could have up to 100 nuclear weapons within the next five years.
Experts at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies and the Institute for Science and International Security warned recently that North Korea could obtain as many as 100 nuclear weapons by 2020.
According to the report, North Korea currently posses between 10 to 16 nuclear weapons, and with minimal technological advancements, it could increase the total to 20 weapons by 2020.
In another scenario, the report said that the rogue state's stockpile could grow to 50 weapons by 2020 and advances in miniaturization would allow North Korea to mount new warheads on medium-range missiles.
In the worst-case scenario, North Korea could have up to 100 weapons by 2020 with significant technology advancements which would allow it to deploy battlefield and tactical weapons.
Currently, North Korea's missile systems are able to reach most of Northeast Asia using their short-range Nodong missiles.
However, North Korea may also be able to launch intercontinental Taepodong missiles, which could theoretically reach the United States.
North Korea has conducted three nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013, and is still continuing to advance its nuclear programs.
Experts are urging international diplomats to devise ways to deal with the threat that Pyongyang poses to peace and stability.
