Taiwan plane crash rescue worker dies while attempting to recover bodies

Rescue efforts following the devastating crash of a TransAsia Airways plane earlier this month that killed over 40 people continued for more than a week.

The plane, which crashed into the river in the island nation’s capital Taipei, was mostly submerged with water temperatures just above freezing.

Zhong Luji was a 67-year-old emergency worker with over 20 years of experience.

He worked during the 921 earthquake that devastated Taiwan in 1999 and killed thousands and personally trained many of the rescuers who worked side-by-side with him earlier this month along the Keelung river.

Zhong was on the scene for the first three days following the accident, before suddenly fainting while at home.

The rescue worker was rushed to hospital and immediate prepped for surgery, but doctors were unable to save him.

Zhong had ruptured an aneurysm in the large artery in his groin, the Iliac artery, which supplies blood to the legs.

Doctors blame Zhong’s age and the near freezing temperatures of the waters, which constricted his veins and arteries, increasing the pressure on the aneurysm and causing it to rupture.

Zhong’s daughter tearfully said that her father died doing what he loved, that he felt his job was important and that he was doing something to help people.

She said he was and will always be her hero.
