A Bridgeton, New Jersey, police officer, already on paid administrative leave, is now accused of coercing sex from a shoplifting suspect throughout 2014.
Officer Braheme Days and his partner are both on administrative leave because they shot passenger Jerame Reid after a routine traffic stop turned bad on December 30. Although the officers discovered a handgun in the glovebox during the stop, and Reid defied orders not to exit the vehicle, he nevertheless had his hands raised when officer Days and his partner opened fire. The shooting remains under investigation.
The new allegations against Days stem from a shoplifting call at a Rite Aid on January 20, 2014. Days stopped 22-year-old Shakera A. Brown, who had priors for shoplifting. Another conviction for shoplifting would mean serious jail time.
But Day told Brown he wouldn’t arrest her if she handled it “in an adult manner.” So Day let Brown go, but then started showing up at her house in his patrol car where he would demand she perform sexual acts, or else she’d go to jail.
In July, after months of abuse, Brown complained to officer Days’ superiors, but they did nothing. Instead, Days’ rapes continued until he was put on paid leave after shooting Reid in December.
Freedom of Information Act requests reveal that nine other claims of abuse against Days were all dismissed. Brown is suing officer Days and the City of Bridgeton for $25 million.
