A top diplomat from the North Korean envoy to Bangladesh was caught trying to smuggle around $1.7 million worth of gold into that country, according to senior officials.
The First Secretary of the North Korean Embassy in Dhaka, Son Young Nam, arrived on a late flight from Singapore last week. He and another diplomat passed through the green channel in the immigration queue. However he was ordered by customs officials to allow his luggage to be inspected. He refused citing diplomatic immunity to the action for over 4 hours.
Once the procedure did go through, about 27 kilograms of gold bullion and ornaments totalling around 1.7 million US Dollars were confiscated from Son's luggage. He was held and later released under the Vienna Convention, however a case has been filed against him with the customs department.
It is suspected that the bullion was to be later sold on the black market in order to raise cash for North Korea, which is isolated from the world's financial system due to strict sanctions from most other governments.
