Extreme surgery: girl has balloons inserted under her scalp to prevent cancer

2015-04-14 1

A 9-year-old girl in the UK had balloons inserted under her scalp as part of a novel treatment to grow new skin in order to remove a large mole covering her head.

Jessica Brett was born with a mole covering about half of her head, which doctors said could be untreatable if it turned cancerous.

To remove the mole, doctors from the Leicester Royal Infirmary inserted silicone balloons underneath her scalp and slowly expanded them by adding saline solution every two weeks. It took a total of six months and more than a pint and a half of saline solution to stretch her skin.

Doctors then removed the balloons and the mole and covered the wound with the excess skin created by stretching the balloons.
