Eleven U.S. servicemen are feared dead after their Army helicopter went down during a training mission off the Florida Panhandle.

The seven Marines and four Army crew were on board a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter that took off from an airport in Destin, Florida and joined a second Black Hawk for a training exercise along a stretch of beach from Destin to Pensacola.

The Black Hawk was reported missing around 8:30 p.m. amid foggy conditions over the Gulf of Mexico near Eglin Air Force Base, about 50 miles east of Pensacola.

A Coast Guard vessel recovered debris from the helicopter including its tail rotor around 2 a.m. Some debris has washed ashore, and human remains have also been found, Air Force officials said.

The second helicopter was able to return to base safely.

The seven Marines were from a special operations regiment based out of Camp LeJeune in North Carolina. The helicopter and four crew were assigned to the Army National Guard unit in Hammond, Louisiana.

The UH-60 helicopter and four crew were assigned to the Louisiana National Guard's 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment. The Marines were from a special operations unit based out of Camp LeJeune, North Carolina.
