Nursing home investigation: University student spends 3 days as a senior citizen

2015-04-14 8

A student surnamed Pan is a healthy 26-year old busy working on his masters. He enjoys playing the violin and often performed at nursing homes during high school and university.

Pan is now preparing to research what day-to-day life is like for a senior citizen living in a nursing home, spending 3 days and 2 nights in the home as an experiment.

To better understand the difficulties the elderly suffer he’s also created an interesting contraption with a physical rehab specialist, Dr. Li. The braces are designed so that he cannot fully straighten his legs while special straps prevent him from straightening up to his full height. As a result he has to walk with a slight hunch so the rehab specialist has provided him with a cane for balance.

Dr. Li’s reassured Pan that he’ll need it.

Goggles fog up Pan’s vision and he’ll wear soft silicone earplugs to muffle his ears.

Dr. Li said he tried the get up and began to feel uncomfortable after about 15 minutes. Pan plans on wearing the device during the entire 3-day experiment. Dr. Li said he wished Pan luck.

Pan said he hopes his research will help him better understand what kind of challenges the elderly face in their day-to-day lives. It’s also a challenge Taiwan’s society and government will have to face up to fairly soon, because the country has an aging population and by 2018 14% of Taiwan’s population will be above the age of retirement.

As Pan tries to play his violin, while still strapped into his contraption he leaves us with the comment: “Man, getting old kind of sucks.”
