A flood warning remains in effect across parts of North America including Armstrong and Clarion counties in Pennsylvania through Monday as the Allegheny River may give way to ice jams, causing an overflow of water in the surrounding area.
Ice jams usually occur in spring when river ice starts to thaw. An ice jam, alternatively called an ice dam, is formed when a river's flow is blocked by downstream ice floe.
This leads to an increase in water level, which causes flooding when the flowing water overcomes the dam of river ice or the river banks.
River ice jams pose a great danger as they are unpredictable and can lead to more rapid and deeper flooding.
A resident of Clarion County said that ice jams occurred along the Allegheny River around the same time in 1959.
