Three children aged one, five, and 12, were stabbed to death and two other people were wounded in an attack in a Burmese community in New Bern, North Carolina, police said Wednesday. The suspect, 18-year-old Eh Lar Doh Htoo, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Other charges are expected.
Authorities said at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to a report of a person with a knife. The officers entered the home and found the injured and two of the dead children. A third child died at a hospital. Warrants identify the victims as 12-year-old J. Sa, 5-year-old J. Romin, and 1-year-old H.H. Neing.
Their mother and older sister were wounded. They were treated and released from a hospital.
Police said Htoo knew the victims but they weren't related. He apparently has a history of possible mental illness and delusions according to people interviewed in the community. "He would come in and punch the door and he would look like very crazy," said Ner Wah. "He would come to my house and he would say something like, 'I'm your husband'."
New Bern is a picturesque town of 30,000 on the near the coast and is home to about 1,900 Burmese refugees.
Htoo was expected to appear in court in New Bern on Thursday.
