Fifeteen live maggots were removed from Ana Cardoso’s gums last week in Brazil. The 10-year-old had been complaining about ‘something’ moving around in her gums for days, but Ana’s mother Adriana did not think much of it. However, no matter how much Ana brushed her teeth, the wriggling sensation persisted.
Ana was taken to the dentist for a checkup, the dentist then diagnosed her with a rare form of oral myiasis, and removed 15 live maggots from her gums.
The rare condition arises from an infection in which fly larva grow inside humans and animal tissue. The infestation is more common in regions with a warmer climate. Those from poorer social background or people who may have suffered wounds to the face are more likely at risk of getting the disease.
