A widespread power outage in Washington, DC and Maryland left thousands, including the president, temporarily without power.
A fire at a power plant in Southern Maryland caused the outage, which lasted for about 10 seconds at the White House. Back up generators presumably then kicked in, according to reports.
The University of Maryland cancelled classes for the rest of the day while fire departments across the region scrambled to rescue people trapped in elevators.
According to a WUSA-9 report, a high voltage power surge caused the outages, which affected 2,400 customers.
