South Carolina police officer Michael Slager has been charged with murder after a graphic video filmed by an anonymous person shows him shoot a fleeing, unarmed man.
Following a traffic stop, Officer Slager got into some kind of altercation with 50-year-old Walter Scott. A video shows the two enter a vacant lot where Slager tasers him, and then shoots Scott in the back eight times as he tries to flee. Slager then called for backup and claimed Walter Scott had taken his taser.
Walter Scott was hit five times, with at least one bullet entering his heart. Local police were inclined to accept the officer’s original tale, but on Tuesday (March 7, 2015), Michael Slager was charged with murder after graphic video evidence of his crime came to light. News reports noted that murder is punishable by death in South Carolina.
