News camera footage of group of San Bernardino sheriff's deputies beating a suspect as he lay face-down in the dirt with his hands behind his back following a hours-long chase through Californian backcountry has been described by their superior as "disturbing."
On Thursday, April 3, deputies visited a home on Zuni Road, Apple Valley, around noon to serve Francis Pusok a search warrant.
Pusok—under investigation for identity-theft—is said to have fled in a car as officers approached. A car chase ensued over multiple counties, ending at a place 80 miles northeast of downtown LA named Bowen Ranch. There, deputies found Pusok's abandoned car and learn he had taken off on foot.
The New York Times reports Pusok then came upon a group on horseback and stole one of the horses.
Deputies caught up with the fugitive three hours later in rocky terrain, an NBC news helicopter recorded it all. Pusok then fell from the horse and deputies deployed tasers. Moments later 11 men were on him. The beating seen in the video, NBC reports, entails 37 punches, 17 kicks and for baton strikes. Pusok was struck in the head 13 times.
County sheriff, John McMahon has launched an investigation.
