2015-04-14 11

Mexico announced on Tuesday that its army has discovered an unfinished drug smuggling tunnel beneath a half-built house in Tijuana, close to the United States. border.

Federal authorities raided on a residence on Callejon Constelacion. The house is close to Tijuana International Airport and an office of the Federal Police. Nine suspects were arrested and a truck used to transport debris was seized in the raid.

Photos taken at the scene show the tunnel is very narrow. Mexican authorities said the incomplete tunnel measures about 150 metres long and does not appear to cross into the United States.

U.S. authorities have demolished more than 80 cross-border tunnels since 2006. Apart from drug, tunnels of such kind can be used to smuggle migrants.
