One child is dead and another is in grave condition after a car plunged off a road into the Port of Los Angeles Thursday evening.
Witnesses said that at around 6 p.m. a car was going at about 15 miles per hour at a 45-degree angle straight at the port. The driver may have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake when he was trying to park.
The car plunged 30 feet straight into the water and took just a few seconds to sink.
Firefighters arrived just as the father came up out of the water and swam to one of the ladders, while the mother hovered above the car and kept screaming "My kids, my kids." One firefighter, Miguel Meza, stripped off his clothes and jumped into the water to help the trapped boys still in the submerged car.
After pulling the parents safely back on shore, divers plunged back into the water to save the children. The children were submerged for 10 to 15 minutes before they were brought to the surface. Both boys were unresponsive and had no pulses. Resuscitation efforts began immediately.
The 13-year-old boy was declared dead at the hospital, and the other 8-year-old boy is in grave condition. It is unsure whether the event was an accident or not.
