A team of engineering students at Rice University in conjunction with the Baylor College of Medicine are in the process of developing a vest intended for the deaf and hearing impaired that can translate spoken words into a pattern of vibrations.
A vest could one day help people who can’t hear words feel them instead.
The wearable device, also an acronym for Versatile Extra-Sensory Transducer, is being developed by engineering students at Rice University led by a neuroscientist from Baylor College of Medicine.
The most recent version of the garment includes 40 actuators, or vibratory motors, sewn into the back along with two batteries and a controller board.
