French rescuers have retrieved the cockpit voice recorder of crashed Germanwings flight U49525, which is hoped will yield more information about the circumstances of the crash in the French Alps.
En route to Düsseldorf, Germanwings flight U49525 took off from Barcelona at around 10:01 a.m.
Chief Executive of Germanwings said that the plane reached 38,000 feet at approximately 10:35 a.m. But ten minutes later, it started to descend. The plane was around at 6,000 feet when radar contact was lost at 10:53 a.m. It crashed into a ravine soon after.
Data suggests the pilots remained in control during the descent, but it remains unclear why, if there was a problem, the aircraft did not change course to three nearby airports, including Nice, Marseille and Toulon.
An official said the plane had been ‘pulverised’, with small bits of wreckage strewn all over the mountainside. The cockpit voice recorder has been recovered at the crash site and investigators are examining it to assist with the investigation.
A witness said no smoke was coming from the aircraft nor was there any sign of trouble before the crash.
