French investigators have said that the co-pilot of the Germanwings jet intentionally plowed the plane into the French alps after examining data retrieved from the plane's cockpit voice recorder.
German police searched co-pilot Andrea Lubitz's flat in Dusseldorf and his parents' residence in Montabaur and were seen taking bags of evidence and a computer. Authorities said they made a "significant discovery" but said there was no evidence to suggesting the 28-year-old co-pilot was a terrorist.
Germanwings Flight U49525 was at a cruising height of 38,000 feet around half an hour into its flight at 10:27 a.m. on Tuesday,
The cockpit voice recording shows that pilot Patrick Sonderheimer and co-pilot Andreas Lubitz were chatting without incident before the pilot left the cockpit.
After a short while, the pilot tried to re-enter the cockpit. He used the intercom system to ask Lubitz to open the cockpit door, but received no answer. The pilot the started knocking on the door but Lubitz did not respond.
Sonderheimer then attempted to use an emergency code to regain entry to the cockpit, but Lubitz overrode the codes, locking the cockpit door from the inside.
Lubitz then put the plane into a controlled descent at approximately 10.29am, the pilot can later be heard trying to break the door down.
Recordings show despite audible alarms sounding inside the cockpit, the co-pilot was breathing calmly before the jet crashed.
Currently, European airlines allow one pilot to remain in the cockpit alone. The crash will likely prompt a change in cockpit rules for international airlines.
