Germanwings crash: airlines to adopt rules requiring two crew in cockpit at all times

2015-04-07 46

Major airlines around the world have begun to adopt a new safety policy that requires two crew members in the cockpit at all times in the wake of Tuesday’s Germanwings crash.

Canadian authorities ordered the country’s airlines to adopt the policy on Thursday, while the German Aviation Association says it will consider changing its rules for implementation “as soon as possible”, according to NBC News.

If a flight has only two pilots on board, then a flight attendant must step in if one of the pilots has to exit the cockpit, Canadian Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt told AFP.

Air Canada, Westjet, Air Transat, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Lufthansa, Air Berlin, Easyjet, Monarch Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Thomas Cook have also confirmed that they are adopting the new safety policy, the BBC reported

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has long required two crew members to be in the cockpit at all times. British budget airlines Ryanair, Jet2 and Flybe said that they have already implemented the policy.
