ISIS threat: FBI arrests 2 men for plotting to join Islamic State and attack Illinois military base

Two men -- including a National Guard soldier -- are facing charges of conspiring to support the Islamic State, after the FBI thwarted their plan to join IS and orchestrate a large-scale attack on an Illinois military base.

The Chicago FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Hasan Edmonds, 22, and his cousin, Jonas Edmonds, 29, Wednesday night.

An undercover FBI agent, acting as an Islamic State militant, began messaging Hasan in 2014. Hasan reportedly sent detailed messages about his plan to attack the very military base where he had been training.

"In all honesty, the best way to bet them is to break their will," Hasan wrote in a Facebook message to FBI agent Morgan Spurlock. "With the U.S. no matter how many you kill they will keep coming unless the soldiers and the American public no longer have the will to fight."

The alleged plan was to use AK47s and hand grenades to rack up a body count of 100 to 150 U.S. soldiers.

Hasan's cousin, Jonas Edmonds, reportedly planned to carry out the attack after Hasan had left for Cairo to train with Islamic State militants.

FBI agents arrested Hasan at the Chicago Midway International Airport before he got on the flight.

Officials also arrested Jonas at his house in Aurora, Illinois.

The pair made an initial appearance in Federal court on Thursday. If convicted, they could spend up to 15 years in prison.
