Stephan and Lucy Woytack of Scranton, Pennsylvania were making a routine visit to their family grave at St. Joseph's Cemetery on Monday morning when tragedy struck.
While the couple was decorating a headstone in preparation for Easter, the headstone tipped over and pinned the 74-year-old to the ground.
Lucy tried to lift the tombstone but the 300-400 pound tombstone was simply too heavy for her to lift up on her own. She then ran over to the caretaker at the other end of the graveyard and asked him for help. But the caretaker wasn't able to lift up the gravestone by himself either. By the time the police arrived and helped lift the gravestone, poor Stephan had already died.
Experts said the headstone may have fallen because when the frozen ground begins to thaw, the bases of heavy gravestones often sink into the ground and become unstable.
Stephan will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery, right across from the headstone that killed him.
