UN Security Council discussing Yarmouk situation

2015-04-07 1

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk, located south of the Syrian capital of Damascus. Yarmouk has been under attack by the Islamic State extremists, who control 90% of the area, trapping its 18,000 strong civilian population. UN Security Council member countries are calling for the evacuation of the affected population. The Syrian government, meanwhile, in a letter to the UN Security Council criticized Western media coverage of the events as biased, claiming that Israel is behind the Islamic State extremists.
