It was a difficult day to be a denizen of the Internet (or, even, world) yesterday, gleeful about every potential news item or text message from your friend before the realization sets in, “This is too good to be true,” followed by the grim recollection: “Oh, right, it’s April Fools’ Day.” And—as Us Weekly reminds us each week in the front of its book—celebrities are just like us. Well, not really, in this regard. Their pranks, it would seem, are of a slightly different magnitude.
Rihanna stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, her first time on the show, and they tossed to a pre-taped clip of the singer “pranking” the host by showing up to his house after one A.M., barging into his bedroom (where he was seemingly sleeping soundly), and waking him up with a rendition of her menacing new single “Bitch Better Have My Money.” She commits fully to the endeavor, throwing money at him and jumping up on the bed. Kimmel’s response is . . . somewhat muted; he moves only slightly under his covers, murmuring, “What the f--- is going on?” (He later says, “It seemed like a U.F.O. had landed.”)
Frankly, though, Rihanna showing up late night to perform her awesome new song for you in a personal concert in your home seems to us . . . less like a prank and more like a rare privilege and honor.
