In today’s program our host Cody Weddle interviews Constitutional attorney Hernan Escarrá, who analyzes Venezuela’s relations with the United States and President Obama’s recent Executive Order. Escarrá says that Obama’s imposition of sanctions is supposedly based on national security concerns, but in reality, there is no international legal instrument, treaty or regulation allowing such intervention in another country. Venezuela adheres to principles of international law which make it clear that one nation has no authority, no legal foundation, no legitimacy to intimidate another country. Although Obama accuses Venezuela of being a human rights violator, this is in reality a pretext, says Escarrá. En reality the United States is interested in Venezuela’s oil, other resources, and strategic position. The co-author of Venezuela’s Constitution believes that the two countries should resolve their differences through dialogue in a peaceful, civilized way.
