For the first time in more than half a century, the Peruvian Congress has forced the primer minister and her cabinet to resign. An opposition motion of censure against Prime Minister Ana Jara, charging her with involvement in government spying on politicians and journalists, was passed. The vote is viewed as a blow to President Ollanta Humala, whose popularity has plummeted to 25%. Humala has three days to accept the resignations and appoint a new cabinet. Government supporters say the accusations are not solidly grounded, are a smokescreen to cover corruption scandals in previous presidential administrations, and are designed to undermine the current presidential administration.
