Mexico: Conditions in women's prisons deplorable, report says

Conditions in women's prisons in Mexico are deplorable, according to report from the semi-official National Human Rights Commission (CNDH). In 77 of the country's 122 women's prisons, conditions are deplorable, sexual abuse rampant, and extortion commonplace to protect prisoners' physical integrity. At the same time, some inmates enjoy special privileges, including cable TV, kitchen amenities, and pets. These prisons are often run by mafias or organized crime, with a parallel prison administration. In 2013 a similar report was released, citing the same violations, and the CNDH says little has been done to remedy the situation. Clayton Conn reports from Mexico City. teleSUR
