Ecuador is diversifying its oil-based economy, with plans to build eight hydroelectric dams and switching to the use of renewable energy sources. Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Esteban Albornoz Vintimilla said the goal is for 90% of demand for energy to come from renewable sources. As of next year, when the eight damns are functioning, the country expects to save US$3 billion annually in energy imports, in the process strengthening its sovereignty.
