Scientists recently, and unintentionally, created a new form of ice comprised of square crystals.

They did it by putting a drop of water between two sheets of graphene, each of which was only about an atom thick, yet contained a number of microscopic capillaries.

The ultimate goal was to see how water acts in such an environment, as even though the world is filled with rocks and such that house liquid in similarly minute spaces, little is known about the dynamics involved.

Their experiment produced a surprising outcome.
