Inside The Americas - Reparations in Ecuador for State Torture

2015-03-25 5

In-depth reports and analysis from our extensive network of correspondents throughout the region on the most important developments in Latin America. This week MIreya Cardenas, a former member of the revolutionary guerrilla group Alfaro Vive ¡Carajo! recounts the physical and psychological torture she experienced first at the hands of the CIA in Costa Rica, and then by Military Intelligence in Ecuador, where the exact same methods were used. She also tells us how she and other members of Alfaro Vive ¡Carajo! are using the reparations they have received under Ecuador’s Law for Victims passed in 2013, to transform spaces formerly used for torture into Truth Museums so that people will know what really happened in their country. We also hear from the son of Mireya and fellow guerrilla Fausto Basantes. Under the Victims Reparations Program, the true identity of Fausto Loy Basantes Cardenas has been recognized, a gesture that fills him with pride. teleSUR
