A team of researchers have identified the YAP gene as being an integral component in the body’s ability to grow 3-D tissue and organs and have them align for proper functionality.

Humans and other vertebrates are three dimensional in shape thanks to a gene called YAP.

According to research recently published in the journal Nature, YAP is essential for regulating the tissue tension necessary for parts to form their 3-D shape and align correctly in the body despite the flattening effects of gravity.

An example given is the unique shapes and positioning required for the eye lens, ball socket, and head to coordinate for proper vision.
