Scientists no longer believe that the two Clearwater Lakes in Canada are double impact craters which are formed at the same time; instead, they estimate that the two bodies were created about 180 million years apart.
The two neighboring Clearwater lakes in Canada were believed to be the result of a binary asteroid impact millions of years ago. New research however, indicates that two separate asteroids approximately 180 million years apart were instead responsible.
The lakes are known as double craters, and in this case the indentations left in the Earth are approximately 22 miles and 16 miles in diameter, respectively.
In 1965, researchers suggested the two bodies had been formed by a paired system, known as a binary
