News broke yesterday afternoon that the Ghostbusters Universe is getting even bigger. Which is especially interesting, because until yesterday, nobody really though of the “Ghostbusters Universe” as a thing.
The official announcements came on Deadline yesterday afternoon, and the concrete details were twofold. First, there will be ANOTHER Ghostbusters movie in the not-distant future (DOUBLING the current count of Ghostbusters movies!). And that there’s a new production company called Ghostcorp setting up shop at Sony, with Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman at its head.
The movie will NOT be a all-women Ghostbusters - Channing Tatum and possibly Chris Pratt will be in the cast, and it’s to be written by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Mission: Impossible 5), and directed by the Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier).
So, Ghostbusters is making a (really obvious) play to start its own Cinematic Universe, as Marvel, Star Wars, and dozens of other franchises have done already.
How do you think Ghostbusters will do in the highly competitive world of movie franchises? What do you think of a more male-skewing Ghostbusters hitting the screens soon after the Paul Feig-directed female Ghostbusters? Will you buy all the Ghostbusters Expanded Universe merchandise? What franchise do you hope gets the Cinematic Universe treatment soon?
