When Alysia Abbott was a toddler, her mother died in a car accident and her father came out as homosexual. They moved to San Francisco and so a new life began at the heart of the gay liberation movement. Her book "Fairyland: A Memoir of my Father" is based largely on her father's journals that she found after his death from AIDS related complications in 1992.
It is now being made into a film by Sofia Coppola. Alysia Abbott speaks to Eve Jackson about growing up during the gay rights movement, keeping her father’s sexuality a secret and the time they spent together in Paris just before his death.
