Extreme Mission in Antarctica
The wild Antarctic ocean, a giant white continent that is even difficult to approach due to the extreme environment. Started in 2006, after five years of long investigation, finally one site was found. The wide, flat coast of Terra Nova Bay in Northern Victoria Land. Jang Bogo Station. The second Korean Antarctic Station was built after two years of construction work.
To build a research station in Antarctica, the transportation of construction materials and manpower is the top concern. The Jang Bogo Antarctic Station had to be built in just two years. And the construction work could only be carried out in the austral summer season.
For two seasons starting at the end of 2012, two Ice strengthened vessels set out for Antarctica from Korea, with the Research Vessel Araon (RV Araon), an icebreaker, leading the way through the sea ice zone. With many difficulties expected, the first challenge was to transport the necessary manpower and building materials to the station construction site by breaking through the sheets of ice which encloses the Antarctic Continent.
