Today Venezuela marks the 26th anniversary of the Caracazo, a spontaneous uprising that erupted on February 27, 1989, when residents of Caracas and then other major cities took to the streets, driven to their limit by neoliberal austerity measures implemented by the country's right-wing government. The Caracazo began a new era in Venezuelan politics. teleSUR
