Interviews from Quito - US immigration to Ecuador

2015-02-27 49

Ecuador has becoming an increasing popular destination for US citizens who wish to reside abroad, to a large extent replacing Panama, Costa Rica, and Mexico. This is a relatively new phenomena, occurring in the past five years. In today's program, host Andy Sebastia interviews professor Maria Amelia Viteri of Quito's University of San Francisco. Viteri, who has researched and published studies on the issue, discusses the reasons why US citizens, mainly retirees, move to Ecuador, the community's demographics, and the integration -or lack thereof- of the new arrivals in Ecuadoran society, and future migratory trends. The Ecuadoran government itself has a friendly policy toward retirees settling in the country and obtaining legal residency. teleSUR
