Children and adults frolicked in dozens of swimming pools dotted along the streets in the Peruvian city of Callao on Sunday (22 FEB. 2015) as residents celebrated the last day of Carnival.
The plastic pools provided a welcome relief from the summer heat and have become a frequent feature on the roads of the port city during the carnival month of February.
Some set up pools in front of their homes while other residents club together with those on their block to buy pools that can hold up to 6000 liters (1320 imperial gallons) of water.
Some local councils have banned the use of pools on the streets, arguing that during February last year the equivalent of 30 Olympic-sized pools worth of water was wasted.
Authorities also say that the pools block traffic and that the standing water could become a breeding ground for mosquitoes carrying diseases such as Dengue Fever and Chikungunya.
