Bionic Eye Implant Allows Man To See His Family For First Time In A Decade

Thanks to the implantation of a bionic eye, a man who was rendered blind by a condition that degrades the retinas can now recognize his loved ones.

About 20 years ago Allen Zderad, a 68-year-old grandfather of 10 living in Minnesota, learned that he had retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease. 

His eyesight deteriorated until, approximately 10 years ago, he was no longer able to see anything but bright light. 

Now, thanks to the implantation of a bionic eye, he can see the outlines of people and even recognize his own reflection. 

Among the first individuals he set his new sight on was his wife, an event that caused both to well up with emotion. 

The device that made it possible is actually a comprised of a number of pieces, most of which are worn outside of the body.
