Monkey magic: Kivu gets stuck into his muscle-pumping routine
A super-fit gorilla stunned zoo visitors by demonstrating a workout in his enclosure that would put any gym bunny to shame.

Kivu, a 13-year-old Western lowland gorilla, launched into his exercise regime at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park in Devon.

Regular zoo visitor Chris Rockey, a local photographer, managed to capture Kivu's muscle-pumping routine on camera last Sunday.

"One minute he was just sat there and then he started climbing and swinging," Mr Rockey said.

Kivu, who was born in November 2002, arrived at Paignton Zoo in 2006 and immediately became popular due to his love of showing off to the public.

The gorilla, described as "very smart" by keepers, enjoys a healthy diet - with his favourite food the humble lettuce.

Paignton Zoo, a charity, has a bachelor group of Western lowland gorillas, a critically endangered species.

This group provides a place for young males to grow up in a social environment.

Some may move on to be the dominant males in bachelor or family groups as part of the European breeding programme.
