Does Gender Equality = Stronger Family Units?

2015-02-23 14

This video is part of the global campaign entitled, “Women and Shariah: Separating Fact from Fiction” organised by the Women’s Section of the Central Media Office of Hizb ut Tahrir.

It is PART 4 of a series of 4 videos that examines whether ‘Gender Equality' – a concept often used to condemn Islam’s social laws as oppressive towards women – has in reality delivered on its promises for women.

This video examines the feminist and Western claim that ‘Gender Equality’ is good for women and therefore also good for family life. It addresses how gender equality pressured women to adopt the roles of men, in particular to become wage-earners for themselves and their families. This devalued motherhood and harmed the rights of children and the wellbeing of family life. In contrast, Islam defines a unique social system that prescribes roles and rights for men and women which are complementary rather than competitive, creating a harmonious marital and family life. Additionally, it greatly values motherhood, embracing laws that ensure women are aided in their vital duty of caring for and raising their children. All this protects the rights of children, ensures their effective upbringing, and secures strong family units and healthy societies.
